Workshop Description
What is a visual story? Join photographers Ellen Jacob and Cathy Wilson Ramin in this weekend workshop to explore dramatically different approaches to storytelling. Ellen, focusing on issues of social justice, and Cathy, who documents family stories, will share their processes for creating visual narratives with impact.
Through conversation, examples, photo sessions and discussion of your own work, you'll learn how to identify your story and create a visual language to tell it in your own authentic voice. We will cover both stylistic and technical considerations, such as lighting, composition and the use of visual metaphor. We'll develop your practice and help you determine the best approach to bring your story to life. As images are shared, we will discuss how to sequence and edit your images to best tell your story.

This workshop is suitable for all photographers and storytellers.
Workshop Leaders
Ellen Jacob is an artist-photographer whose work is centered on social justice. Her practice often combines photographic images, retouching techniques and other materials. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally, including the FIF International Festival of Photography in Belo Horizonte, Brazil; the 5th Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography in Barcelona, Spain; the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art; SITE Brooklyn; and Wired Gallery, NY. She is a Ford Foundation and Creative Engagement grant recipient; a Josephine Herrick teaching photographer; an educator at San Francisco Art Institute and a member of Soho Photo Gallery in New York City.

Cathy Wilson Ramin is a photographer and educator. She has lived in five states and visited four continents, carrying her camera around since the days of film. She lost her father to early onset Alzheimer's, which taught her the power of photographs. She turned her lens from nature to people and focused on the connections that form relationships. Using a documentary style, she captures candid moments of authentic life. Her exhibitions include the Salmagundi Art Club in New York, NY; Shoreline Arts Alliances; and the Alice Arts Center, Oakland, CA. She is an educator in New Haven and member of Soho Photo Gallery in New York City.

This workshop will be on Zoom. You don't need to download any software to participate. A link will be provided to you the day before the start date.
Workshops are subject to cancellation, rescheduling or changes up to one week prior to start date.
