Workshop Description

This Interactive Street Photography Workshop has been developed from the following Mission and Artistic Statement:

"The streets are alive and beat to a rhythm of beauty and soul all its own. For life on the streets exists in a world composed of infinite micro-dramas with moments that are fleeting. The eye and the camera can capture and forever memorialize these micro-dramas - at once never seen before and never to be seen again."

This street photography workshop will be an interactive, serious study designed for the intermediate/advanced photographer. The course will help you to build upon your portfolio of work and advance your creative skills.  With inspiration taken from past masters such as Alfred Eisenstaedt, Garry Winogrand, Mary Ellen Mark, Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and Bruce Davidson we will together explore the heroism and nobility of the streets on a visceral and passionate level - to capture the soul of the city and its actors.

This three-session workshop will begin at the Soho Photo Gallery for a two-hour interactive presentation and discussion on Friday evening covering a number of topics, including:

  • Street photography as an art form (what makes street photography an art?)
  • How to recognize the strength and soul of a street scene
  • Composition (instantly) of that street image
  • The drama of light and shadow
  • Variety of subject matter in street photography
  • Plus other artistic and technical subjects

Our second meeting on Saturday will take us onto the streets of New York City for a five- to six-hour photo shoot - followed by a group discussion of the day's activities.  For our third meeting on Sunday we will reconvene at the Gallery to review/critique our individual work from the field and to share the experience and newly gained views on this art form.

Prerequisite:

This workshop is intended for intermediate/advanced photographers and assumes a strong base of experience and working knowledge of the camera and its operations - both manual and semi-automatic.  A working knowledge of digital darkroom tools such as Photoshop and Lightroom will be useful but not required.

Although any camera could be used in this workshop, digital cameras offer the easiest availability of images for group review and discussions.

Workshop Leader

Jake Lambroza started his career as a photojournalist in the 1970's, is based in New York and has practiced the art of street photography under the influence of the great masters noted above in the workshop description.  Jake's work is further defined by "life as a series of fleeting moments composed of infinite micro-dramas."

Working with available light and in black&white, he uses the photographic medium to capture and forever memorialize those fleeting moments - never seen before and never to be seen again.  Throughout his career, Jake's singular mission has been to capture the human essence in each image, believing that "a photograph must have soul to stay with the viewer long after the viewer has moved on."

With numerous awards, many solo shows, several B&W Magazine Spotlight features, multiple images hanging in the permanent collection at Columbia University and with private collectors, Jake brings a lifetime of experience to the classroom and to the street.
